In Today's Email...

Outburst

From the head of the Department of Computing and Electronic Systems:

The Departmental Management Group will ask the University to change the department's name to:
School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering

Oh great. Now, when people ask me my address, it's going to be:

Prof. Richard A. Bartle
School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering
University of Essex
Colchester
Essex

That one line is going to stick out half-way across the page. It was bad enough when it was:

Prof. Richard A. Bartle
Dept. Computing and Electronic Systems
University of Essex
Colchester
Essex

It's not even easily abbreviated. At least I could put Dept. CES for the old version, but School CSEE is just weird-looking. If it were the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, then it would at least have the acronym SEECS, which is easy to say. Then again, the University already uses SEEC for Southeast Essex College, so I guess that would be a problem. The fact that CES was already taken by the Centre for Environment and Society didn't seem to matter, though.

I guess this means that all our web pages will have their URLs changed, thereby rendering all the existing external links to them useless as far as search engine accounting is concerned.

Wonderful.
