Thank You for Flying

Rant

I have a copy of Raph Koster's book, but at a GDC party his publisher gave me another one. I was going to ask Raph to sign it, but amazingly it was already signed. As the book is 50% pictures, I therefore asked Raph to draw a picture in it for me.

He did more than that: he drew 4 pictures. The pictures were of penguins illustrating my 4 player types, each bearing a suit motif. This was special for me, not just because I was up for the First Penguin award the next day (did I mention I'd won it?), but also because penguins are a running theme in Raph's book. I was very pleased with the result, and grateful to Raph for taking time out to do the drawing (he had to go to 3 other parties that night). That book was destined for pride of place on my bookshelf.

When I got home today, there was a note in my luggage from Covenant Aviation Security, LLC. Theirs is the job of inspecting every piece of luggage to leave San Francisco International airport. Here's what they did to my copy of A Theory of Fun:

Apparently I can claim compensation, but the material value of that copy of the book is somewhat less than the sentimental value.

And they caught the sleeve of my best jacket in the frame of my suitcase...
